Nadir Belhadj was born in France, Saint-Claude on 18th June 1982, but has pinned his colours to the Algerian mast in terms of International football, despite representing France at U-18 level, and has played over 40 games for the Desert Foxes.
Most players we have featured in this tournament as players to watch have been those who have burst onto the scene at an early age but Belhadj has been more of a slow burner. Having started his career in France he was not initially thought good enough for the top flight and the player learnt his apprenticeship with Sedan.
Having impressed with Sedan, Lens were ready to move in for him but Belhadj suffered a frustrating time in his career finding himself behind World Cup winner Fabio Grosso in that team.
The pacey defender eventually moved on to Portsmouth and did enough on loan to merit being signed on permanent terms. As either left back or left wing Belhadj has got the searing speed to trouble most opposition teams and he is a player who has impressed in the Premiership despite the turmoil at Fratton Park this season. Belhadj notably scored this season after blind-siding England full back Glen Johnson, against Liverpool, and although he does not score many his attacking instincts see him grab vital goals.
Belhadj scored in qualifying against Rwanda but blotted his copy-book for the Algerian’s getting sent off against Egypt in the African Cup of Nations.
Xavi Hernandez of Barcelona and Spain has recently singled him out for praise and it is likely that Belhadj will soon make a move to another top flight club.
