I can think of anything more boring than a World Cup Opening ceremony. Hundreds of schoolchildren and amateur dancers parading about in ridiculous costumes to dreadful music. No wonder Nelson Mandela will not be staying for it all - let alone staying for the first game of the tournament.
At my German language course today, I was chatting to an Italian, a Peruvian and a Spaniard about the World Cup. All three were keen to go to the pub to watch the opening cermony! I was just keen to go to the pub.
I'm not sure who the 'spectacular' is actually for. The players will not be there, the real football fans will not be there, the sports reporters will not be there. Without wanting to sound too grumpy on the eve of the World Cup, it is a total waste of time and money.
This will be my 10th World Cup in my living memory and I can't remember seeing a single opening ceremony. I hope that continues. Let's just hope they don't have a closing ceremony...but I've got a feeling they will.

... Come on Dave - lighten up !! Without an opening ceremony we'd never have had the best penalty miss of all time and a great pub quiz question - which world cup tournament began and ended with a penaly miss? I'm talking of course about the pitiful effort by Diana Ross who failed to "hit the target" from six yards (albeit in white high heels and carrying a microphone. I've always wondered if the over enthusiatic goalie would have saved it anyway !! |

... Chris, Interesting thought. Keep holding banal opening ceremonies just for the sake of pub quiz questions. What will 2010 bring? Question 5. The death of whom caused Nelson Mandela to miss the 2010 World Cup opening ceremony? While writing that piece I was trying to remember an opening ceremony I had seen. I realised I had only seen a clip of the Diana Ross 'incident' which although providing a well rounded quiz question was, at the end of the day, a complete waste of money. |

... Its crazy how many Vuvuzelas are out there. Deafening! At least, those who cant stand the thing can vent their anger on the iPhone app Vuvuzaga |
|
... They are annoying..like listening to a swarm of bees. However, don't what is worse...the constant drone of the Vuvuzelas or Jim Beglin. |
|
... For vuvuzela read klaxon horn, West Germay 1974 - an equally unimaginative constant drone. As for Jim Beglin, when will he enlighten us with some insight in to the world of professional football instead of stating the obvious ? |

... I never understand the need for co-commentators - it's rare that any of them add any insight. I can't remember when they were introduced but I remember watching World Cup games in my youth and they were not in vogue. Motson, Coleman, Sinstadt, Gubba and Davies had to call the full 90 minutes by themselves. Here in Germany they still tend to just use one for each game. Not that German commentators are very good, they just tend to call the action without bringing in any interesting facts to add context. They seem to commentate for the casual fan rather than knowledgeable fans and are disliked by proper German football fans. |
