There nothing wrong with a bit of self deprecation, so that's why we like the new World Cup song by the excellent comedy/singer Mitch Benn called 'Go Out On Penalties Again.'
It's pretty much does what it says on the tin - the story of how England will be eliminated on penalties again sung in a jaunty upbeat stlye -a touch of Neil Young..perhaps (I don't really know my music...ideas anyone?)
A seasoned TV comedy performer, Benn has been appearing on UK TV for a number of years. You can check out his biography here.
The video is hardly professional quality but does not claim to be though it still does a good job of accompanying the comedy tune.
As Benn puts on his website "Here's the World Cup song I've been waiting for someone to write for decades, so I figured I might as well write it myself..."
In the dearth of jingoistic or sentimental World Cup songs and videos, this stands out and for us sums up the World Cup nicely...it's just a bit of fun!

... Thanks for the comments about the video. I cobbled it together as a joke, and it is an unofficial music video for the song (Mitch likes it but it's the only way Ipad/iphone owners can listen to the song at the moment). C'mon England! |
