Reports emerging from South Africa suggest Rio Ferdinad could be a real doubt for England's opening game against the USA after being sent to hospital for a scan on an injured knee.
England boss Fabio Capello said: "In the last moments of training Rio suffered a problem in the knee.
"We have to wait. It was a normal tackle and he trained and there was a problem with his left knee ligaments.
"He just went to hospital for a scan. We hope it is not so serious but Dawson is on standby."
Should Ferdinand not make the opening game it will be interesting to see who Fabio Capello will name as England captain on June 12. John Terry was strippped of his captaincy after problems in his personal life with Steven Gerrard looking the most likely candidate.
His absence would be unfortunate but not alarming for England as he has had an injury blighted season, has generally not been at his peak and is considered a poor leader.
At A2bworldcup we hope he does not make it as the thought of him lifting the World Cup for England fills us with a little embarrassment.
** UPDATE**
Rio Ferdinand has been ruled out of the World Cup after injuring his left knee in training.
The England captain broke down after a tackle in the final few minutes of his team's first training session since landing in South Africa, and was taken to hospital for a scan.
The results of the scan are believed to indicate knee ligament damage and the 31-year-old will take no further part in the World Cup.
Michael Dawson, who was part of Fabio Capello's initial 30-man squad, is the likely replacement, while Steven Gerrard will be promoted to the captaincy.

... lol. Yea, Carragher had a great season in a team that really did well. Silly me. In Carragher we trust. |
|
... As does the thought of Stevie G la lifting the World Cup. He'll have his Phil Collins greatest hits on at full blast!! "I can feel it coming in the air tonight..." |
|
... Whatever way you look at it Gerrard prefers Phil Collins but Rio would have had some soppy r+b track playing. Still got to prefer Gerrard lifting the cup over Ferdinand. At least he's a Scouser....and a good player still. |

... @Kris Mole Won't you give up on Carragher. I doubt you saw him in more than a couple of games this season - probably both games against Spurs. In the first one he banged his head in the first half and in the second he played right back. Also what is the logic about a team not playing well? Surely if a team is not playing well then defenders have more to do. More interestingly though is that Spurs conceded more goals than Liverpool in the league last season...with the mighty Dawson and King! |
