Asamoah Gyan - Players to star in South Africa

England World Cup Blog

Asamoah Gyan was born in Accra on the 22nd November 1985 and has packed a lot into his career so far including spells in Italy and France.

The striker was picked up from his local club Liberty Professionals, by Italian side Udinese who spotted a potential star, but a player who was also very raw. Asamoah was loaned out to Modena to gain more experience but came back to feature heavily in the Bianconeri’s 2006-2007 season when they finished an excellent 10th. Injury curtailed his career in Italy and eventually he moved on to Rennes in France’s Ligue 1.alt

In between times Gyan had been linked with a big money move to Lokomotiv Moscow and was also reportedly a target for Manchester United, Arsenal and Milan.

Gyan is a player who is hard to ignore and hit the headlines for many reasons in Ghana’s World Cup Final campaign last time around. He scored the fastest goal in the tournament netting after just 68 seconds in the Black Stars’ victory over the Czech Republic. In the youngest squad at the last tournament and at just 20 years of age he could be proud of his strong performances that helped his side escape the opening group stage. Gyan’s sending off, for a second bookable offence for diving, in the defeat against Brazil showed a different aspect to his inexperience.

Gyan is one of those players who seems to perform better for his country than at club level and demonstrated this with 3 out of Ghana’s 4 goals in the recent African Cup of Nations. His overall tally of 17 goals in 32 games for The Black Stars means this strong quick athletic striker will be again a major threat and this time the 24 year old comes armed with more experience.
