The news that Gareth Barry has been given another week to prove his fitness ahead of the World Cup, has opened the door for the likes of Michael Carrick, Tom Huddlestone and Scott Parker to prove they have what it takes to replace the Manchester City man. But if you believe rumours, James Milner is the man Fabio Capello has earmarked to fill in for Barry, should he not recover in time.
Just last week I was full of praise for Milner, the Aston Villa man has been in sensational form this season, and has quite rightly guaranteed a spot on the plane to South Africa. However, the thought of Milner in a holding role for England concerns me.
For Aston Villa, Milner does play in a central midfield role, however he is given much more license to attack, a holding role would mean Milner would have to be a lot more disciplined, and it is doubtful whether Milner could do that.
To be fair to Milner he is a team player, and I doubt he would forget his defensive responsibilities, but you have to feel that he would much more effective given an attacking midfield role, or even a spot on the flanks.
Personally I feel that Capello will be looking at Milner due to the disappointing performance from Michael Carrick against Mexico. Despite been given the chance to make the spot his own, Carrick didn't have the best of nights, and was eventually replaced by fellow candidate Tom Huddlestone, who again didn't do a lot.
In the cold light of day, Barry is streaks ahead of all the alternatives, and it would be real blow for England's chances if he was to miss out through injury. Capello has had a very successful time as England manager, and Barry has featured in all but three of the games, which demonstrates how important he is to the England side.
As for Milner, it would also be a big shame if we saw his England displays this summer limited to a holding role in the centre of the England midfield. Given the freedom, I feel Milner could be one of the star players this summer, so for the good of Milner, and for the good of England, lets hope Barry can prove his fitness in the next seven days.
