Funniest WC moment ever

England World Cup Blog

Someone in the office earlier was asking everyone what their funniest World Cup moment of all time was, and it didn't take me long to be certain I had the winner in my mind.

I juggled between this and the Cameroon assault on Claudio Caniggia in the opening game of Italia 90, which, it has to be said, was flipping hilarious. If you don't know what I'm talking about you can see it by clicking here.

But there's no two ways about it, the funniest World Cup moment of all time came when Zaire faced a Brazil free-kick in 1974. Enjoy....

And if that vid's not working, you can see it by clicking here.

So, come on... What are your all-time favourite comedy moments from the greatest competition on earth? Let's have a laugh :D

The Zaire freekick is amazing! I remember seeing it a few years back and it still makes me chuckle!

I also loved Zidane's headbutt when I think Cannivaro called his sister a cheap whore. Not exactly funny per se but a memorable moment

Very effective wall!

I always laugh when I think about Clive Thomas back in '78, blowing the final whistle just as Zico was heading what should have been the winner against Sweden. What a cock he looked trying to fend of the Brazilian protests!

Maradona's ephedrine-fueled charge to the pitch-side camera in '94, like Chucky on a murder spree (bloody knife just out of shot) still tickles me...

but Diana Ross's superb pen in the opening ceremony the same year just sneaks it for me. Ridiculous idea; appropriately executed.

I seem to remember seeing an Arab sheikh coming on to the pitch (possibly 1982 but not sure) to protest against a referee's decision and try to take his players off the field. Anyone know what I'm talking about, or have I got it all wrong?

Whatever it was, it was pretty funny

You're right, Kris, I remember that, it was 1982. France against Kuwait I think. The fella was head of the Kuwaiti FA. Wasn't it something to do with a goal France scored that should have been disallowed. Can't remember the details, but certainly remember the sheikh running on and arguing with the ref.
