Manchester City have once again flexed their mighty financial muscles with a £20 million bid for England midfielder James Milner. The Aston Villa man has been in superb form for club and country this season, and could just be a star man for England this summer.
Milner got his England chance in last years friendly with Holland and has since then been a a mainstay in Fabio Capello's England squads. Milner who started the season as a long shot to make the England squad, ended it as one of the first names in it.
What has made Milner such an integral part of the England set-up has been his versatility, he is comfortable in any position across the midfield, and with a limited squad, Capello will be looking for players who can do this.
Milner has played most of his club football in the centre of midfield this season, and his performances have been nothing short superb. While nobody would of doubted the determination and effort of Milner, he has surprised many with his quality, and has contributed seven goals and 12 assists this season.
Milner has certinaly proved a lot of people wrong with his performances this season, me included. And I expect him to keep doing so in South Africa. He is an almost an old fashioned midfielder. He might not have electric pace, or even the flair, but he has something about him which is effective, and he has become a vital man in the England squad.
Personally I would like to see Milner play on the left of a five man midfield in South Africa, thus freeing Steven Gerrard in to an offensive central position. I think in this position Milner could be a surprise man for England this summer, and if he can do this City won't just be the only team perusing Milner, could just be a star man for years to come.
