David Beckham's dream of becoming the first Englishman to star in four World Cup's is in tatters after the 34-year old tore his Achilles tendon during AC Milan's 1-0 victory over Chievo on Sunday.
Beckham, on loan at AC Milan from LA Galaxy was unchallenged when the injury occurred and he hobbled around briefly before being stretchered from the field in tears, both from pain and the disappointment of missing the World Cup in South Africa.
Speculation is rife that Beckham, England's most-capped player with 115 appearances, may have to end his playing career though his agent, Simon Oliviera, has denied these claims stating that he expects his client to play for LA Galaxy towards the end of the Major League Soccer season in America.
The injury will be a devastating blow to Beckham, who only needs 11 more appearances to become the most-capped England player of all time, as he has worked extremely hard to get back into the England setup after falling out of favour during Steve McLaren and Sven Goran Eriksson's time in charge of the national team.
Beckham was spotted leaving the AC Milan hotel on crutches and is due to fly to Finland today to undergo an operation to repair his torn Achilles tendon. One of the best knee surgeons in the world, Dr Sakari Orava will operate on the former England captain and he expects him to make a full recovery, although not in time for the World Cup stating it will take at least three months to get back to playing football and a further month, at least, to be able to kick the ball with his usual strength.
Whilst Beckham would be unlikely to start as first choice down the right hand side of midfield, his experience and presence in the squad would have been priceless. His injury means Theo Walcott and Shaun Wright-Phillips are most likely candidates to fill his vacancy.
I personally think Beckham will still travel with the England squad to South Africa as a player of his stature would be welcomed in the England dressing room. However, I also strongly believe this could be the last we see of David Beckham in a football shirt, and if that is true, football has lost one of its icons.

... That sucks that he doesnt get to play the world cup 2010 because that would be his fourth time playing in the world cup. |

Beckham to miss 2010 World Cup Hello! This sucks that he can't play. He would have played his hardest and it would be his 4th time entering this tournament... I think England will win because they have more experience than U.S. and Beckham isn't playing so yeah... |
