Get Bent!

England World Cup Blog

The debate over who should partner Wayne Rooney up front this summer is as vocal as ever recently, with question marks being put above the names of Defoe, Crouch, Cole, and even Heskey. But for some reason unknown to me, one player is being overlooked, despite being the 2nd highest scoring Englishman (behind Rooney) in the Premiership this season.

In fact, in a comment on here a couple of days ago I put the suggestion out there, but had no response.

So I'll try again.

Darren Bent.

Last night he scored his 16th, 17th and 18th Premiership goals of this campaign, and I can't see why he isn't being given more of a chance under Capello.

OK, he kind of failed at Tottenham, although that's not to say he didn't score goals for the North London club.

But either way, Capello has always prided himself on the fact that he picks player based solely on their current form, and I challenge you to show me an English striker (apart from Rooney!) that is in better goalscoring form than Bent.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce came out and aired my thoughts last night after the game, saying "I have had a bad enough time trying to pick a team for the last three months, so I am not going to tell Fabio Capello how to do it because he has been there, worn the T-shirt and done it."

"He is a natural goalscorer, so he still must be in with a shout because you have got [Wayne] Rooney and you have got [Jermain] Defoe. Those two come to mind, and there are not too many after that, natural goalscorers. He has got to be knocking on the door. Has to be."

And it's not like Bent's only scoring against crap defences. This season he's hit the back of the net against Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal, the established top four. And he's doing it all in a mediocre team.

To sum up, the player I'd love to see at least included in the squad is Darren Bent.

I realise that lack of experience will go against him, but why can't he be given a chance to impress in the build up to the finals at least?

Your thoughts please. If you can be arsed.

I've never forgiven him for his 'beachball' goal.

However, I'm all for taking in-form players to the World Cup.

Rooney's partner is up for grabs so it could be up to players to perform well in the final few games to prove they are worthy.

Simply not good enough
The problem with Bent, and even the likes of Defoe etc, is that he simply is not international quality. Both Bent and Defoe are good strikers in the Premiership but they just lack that special something for the biggest stage.
